INITIAL INTAKE and Acupuncture Session

1.5-2 hours - $200

This is a new patient appointment, where we gather information and you receive acupuncture. Together we go over your health history, health intentions, chief complaint, and any concerns you may have. Chinese Medicine looks at the body in its entirety, and this thorough process helps us to identify what physiological systems are involved in your chief complaint, how best to address it, and approximate how long it will take to resolve.

Acupuncture employs needles placed strategically along energetic pathways to treat the root and branch of an imbalance, while taking into consideration each individual in the disease's development.  It works by enabling your body to rest and integrate a new message at the cellular level.  A session may also include any of the following: moxabustion, cupping, 'gua sha', lifestyle prescription, food therapy prescription, an Herbal medicine prescription.

An Herbal Medicine Prescription employs Chinese Medicine principles to herbs to treat the branch symptoms and root cause of an imbalance, while tailored to to you.  Chinese Medicine herbology is a comprehensive, scientific system of categorizing and combining herbs into effective formulas, with a rich history of 3,000 years for treating just about anything under the sun. Ideal for continuing care, or acute issues like common colds and flus, chronic pain, or to accelerate the pace of healing. It may take a couple acupuncture sessions together before I have enough information to give you an appropriate herbal formula, and regular follow-ups to make sure we are keeping up with adjustments as your body heals and changes.

What Can I Expect With A Treatment?

  • Wear loose clothing that is easy to roll up or move aside to access acupuncture points.

  • Eat something before coming: acupuncture can be very moving and can leave you light-headed otherwise.

  • Acupuncture needles are about the size of a cat’s whisker.  Needles are brand new and single-use.

  • “Qi sensations” elicited by the needle can be heavy, tingly, achy, numb, or electrical, as well as a spreading and moving.

  • Be prepared to relax.  Acupuncture sends a deep message to the body’s cellular level.  Taking time after treatments to relax allows the acupuncture message to optimally integrate.

  • Some patients may experience dramatic relief with one session, while others may take a few sessions to notice subtle changes.

  • Healing is not always linear, and sometimes you may feel temporarily worse as your body clears something as deeper layers begin to heal.

Can I See other Health Practitioners at the same time?

It’s recommended only to see your GP or specialist alongside acupuncture. Seeing multiple complementary health practitioners at the same time can reduce the effectiveness of your treatment, and reduce the clarity of what is going on. For the best results, it’s encouraged that you only work with us during your treatment period.

Why do I feel worse after acupuncture or herbs?

Your body’s method for clearing deeply held illness is usually a bout of getting sick! Healing is not linear - sometimes you may feel temporarily worse on your way to feeling better. Please reach out if you are feeling worse after a treatment, and we can discuss whether there’s supportive practices you can do to help yourself on your way to feeling better, or sometimes we may need to evaluate whether my diagnosis was correct. Either way, it’s important to be in touch!

What’s your particular approach to working with people?

We work together: My goal is to empower you with the tools you need to support yourself in your healing process; sometimes those tools and prescriptions come during the first session, and sometimes it may come in a couple sessions, and sometime they’re strewn throughout our work together. Often, certain messages you have been sending your body through lifestyle habits, behaviors, or beliefs are oftentimes the very culprits preventing your body from healing. Therefore the ‘lifestyle prescriptions’ I prescribe for you outside of our sessions together are just as important as the time we spend together in treatment.

My goal is for you to thrive and to eventually feel empowered to take over your own care, and only require coming in for the occasional tune-up!

Why are you more expensive than other Lic. Acupuncturists?

75 minute sessions are single booking only: my full attention, presence, skillset and knowledge are directed solely in service of your care for the duration of your session so that we can dive deeply into problem-solving and treatment. Depending on what additional modalities I deam necessary during the session, such as cupping, gua sha, bodywork, food therapy prescriptions, moxabustion, or an herbal prescription, are all included as part of the session (the cost of herbs themselves are not included). While I am trained in both Classical and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for chronic issues I lean heavily on Classical Chinese Medicine channels that require a longer 40 min needle retention time, because they are entering into the level of your constitution.
